Introduction

For nearly a decade, the founder of Graphix Island worked in private-label marketing for the German grocery group EDEKA. As brand manager she led the entire non-food textiles division. Her work centred on process control, coordination, concept and the packaging development behind new products and relaunches across textiles and hardware. Together with creative agencies she built a corporate identity for these brands – from the logo through brand concepts, packaging design and point-of-sale layouts.

As a packaging engineer, part of her remit was leading an internal group dedicated to packaging sustainability – a topic that keeps gaining weight, and one shoppers pay ever closer attention to at the shelf.

About the client

The EDEKA group is a cooperatively organised retail association in Germany. Its head office holds 50 percent of the shares in seven regional companies, with the remaining 50 percent held by regional cooperatives. The head office also controls the discount chain Netto Marken-Discount and runs its own sourcing organisation for fruit and vegetable imports, a wine and sparkling wine cellar, and a range of service companies including a bank, a publishing arm and an insurance brokerage.

The group and its private labels

The group does not only love food – non-food matters just as much. That segment has been growing for years and takes up an ever larger share of floor space, drawing shoppers in with attractive prices and product innovation. Alongside branded goods, EDEKA sells a wide range of private-label products, both in its own stores and through its subsidiary Netto Marken-Discount: EDEKA zuhause, Gut & Günstig and DRIFTER for textiles, Visosan for eyewear, My fellow for pet supplies and more. In quality and variety, non-food is in no way behind food.
