S ince 24 August 2026, ChatGPT has been showing ads in Europe too. The ads appear below the answer, are labelled as sponsored and, since 31 August, businesses can book them themselves. Alongside Google Ads and Meta, this creates another major advertising channel that reaches people in the middle of their research.

Opinions in the industry swing between gold-rush excitement and rejection. Neither helps you decide whether the channel pays off for your business. For that, you need to understand how the ads are targeted, where the risks lie and what a meaningful test looks like.

The key facts at a glance

  • ChatGPT Ads have been live in Germany and 30 other European markets since 24 August 2026.
  • Only users of the free version and the Go plan see ads, and no minors.
  • Instead of keywords, so-called context hints steer which conversations an ad can appear in.
  • According to OpenAI, the ad does not influence ChatGPT’s answer.
  • There are hardly any benchmarks for costs and results in Europe yet. A test therefore needs a fixed budget and clean tracking.

What are ChatGPT Ads?

ChatGPT Ads are paid ads that OpenAI displays below a ChatGPT answer. They are labelled as sponsored and, according to OpenAI, run separately from the system that generates the answer. Advertisers see no chats, no chat histories and no user memories.

The European launch came quickly. OpenAI started testing ads in the US in February 2026 and opened self-service access there in May. On 18 August the company announced the expansion to 31 European markets, and six days later the first ads went live. Since 31 August, businesses across Europe can book campaigns themselves in the OpenAI Ads Manager. The official announcement is on the OpenAI blog.

According to OpenAI, its advertising business reached an annualised run rate of one billion US dollars at the end of August. The channel is no longer an experiment that will disappear tomorrow.

How do ChatGPT Ads work?

The biggest difference from Google Ads lies in targeting. With Google, you book search terms. In ChatGPT, you use context hints to describe the conversations in which your offer fits. OpenAI’s system decides which ad appears for which question.

  • Context instead of search terms. Context hints help with matching but do not guarantee delivery for specific questions.
  • Auction by click or impression. Billing works via auction, per click (CPC) or per thousand impressions (CPM), optionally optimised for conversions. There is no minimum budget.
  • Measurement via pixel and API. You measure conversions with the OpenAI Pixel or the Conversions API. Both can be implemented via Google Tag Manager.
  • No personalisation in the EU. At launch, OpenAI serves ads in Europe purely based on context, without personal interest profiles.

ChatGPT Ads, Google Ads and GEO compared

If you want to be visible in ChatGPT, you have two routes. Either a paid ad appears below the answer, or your business is named in the answer itself. Being named is the goal of GEO, the optimisation for AI systems. Google Ads remains the established route through the search engine.

ChatGPT Ads Google Ads GEO
Where visible below the ChatGPT answer in Google search results in the answers of ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and other AI systems
Targeting context hints keywords content, structure and authority of the website
Costs per click or impression per click effort for content and optimisation, no click costs
Effect immediately after approval immediately after approval after weeks to months
Control medium, no guarantee for specific questions high, search terms precisely controllable low, the AI system decides itself
Benchmarks for Europe hardly available available for many years measurable through regular prompt tests

The three routes do not exclude each other. How brands appear in AI answers is explained in the article AI Visibility. The difference between classic search engine optimisation and GEO is covered in SEO vs. GEO.

What opportunities do ChatGPT Ads offer?

The opportunity lies in the timing of the ad. Anyone asking ChatGPT which software solves a specific problem or what matters when choosing a service provider is usually already in the middle of a decision. An ad that shows a suitable solution at exactly that moment meets genuine interest.

Timing in the market matters too. The channel is only a few weeks old in Europe, and in many industries nobody advertises there yet. If you test now, you learn which context hints work before the auctions fill up. With Google Ads, this phase ended many years ago.

What are the risks of ChatGPT Ads?

The risks are manageable if you know them before you start. You should check six points.

Little control over delivery

Context hints are not keywords. You do not decide which question your ad appears for, you only describe when it fits. If you are used to detailed search term reports from Google Ads, you will need to rethink and judge results more by conversions.

Hardly any benchmarks

There is no official price list and no reliable average for click prices or conversion rates in Europe. Every forecast is therefore an estimate. Plan a test with a fixed budget and a fixed period, then decide based on your own figures.

Limited reach

Only users of the free version and the Go plan see ads. Users of Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise or Edu do not. In B2B, many decision-makers work with paid plans. In our assessment, the reachable audience there is smaller than ChatGPT’s user numbers suggest.

Tracking and data protection

Without measurement, no test can be evaluated. Pixel and Conversions API must be implemented cleanly and aligned with your cookie banner. If data is transferred to OpenAI, you need a legal basis and a note in your privacy policy. Clarify these points with your data protection officer before the campaign starts.

User trust

Many people use ChatGPT because they expect a factual answer. Advertising changes that environment. OpenAI therefore visibly separates ad and answer and excludes sensitive topics. An ad in ChatGPT must match the question and be genuinely helpful. Loud sales messages feel out of place there.

Excluded industries

OpenAI does not show ads on sensitive topics such as health, mental health and politics. Users under 18 are also excluded. For medical practices, clinics or political organisations, the channel is therefore not an option.

Who are ChatGPT Ads worth it for?

We see the greatest potential in offers that need explaining and are compared before purchase.

  • B2B service providers such as agencies, consultancies or IT service providers whose customers research and compare providers.
  • Software and SaaS, where users ask ChatGPT for tools to solve a specific problem.
  • Advice-intensive offers with a longer decision phase, such as training programmes or high-value purchases.

Offers that rely on proximity and spontaneous purchases are less suitable. Customers find an emergency service or a restaurant through Google and Google Maps. And if you do not yet have working conversion tracking, you should set up that foundation first.

How to test ChatGPT Ads properly

  1. Define the goal. Decide in advance which action counts as success, for example an enquiry or a booked appointment.
  2. Set up tracking. Implement the OpenAI Pixel or Conversions API and check that conversions arrive.
  3. Derive context hints from real questions. Use the questions customers ask you in initial calls. They describe the conversations in ChatGPT most accurately.
  4. Check the landing page. Visitors from ChatGPT have usually compared options already. The landing page needs a clear message and an obvious next step.
  5. Set budget and period. 90 days are enough to collect first reliable figures and compare several ad variants.
  6. Compare with Google Ads. What counts is the cost per enquiry compared with your existing channels.

Our 90-day pilot follows exactly this process. You will find the details on the ChatGPT Ads page.

Frequently asked questions

On 24 August 2026. On that day, OpenAI introduced advertising in 31 European markets, including Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Since 31 August, businesses have been able to book campaigns themselves in the OpenAI Ads Manager.

Users of the free version and the Go plan. According to OpenAI, users of Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise or Edu see no ads. Users under 18 are also excluded (as of September 2026).

Yes. You create the ad account in the OpenAI Ads Manager, and OpenAI then verifies your business. Tracking, context hints and a suitable landing page take more work than the setup. These three points decide whether your test delivers meaningful figures.

Prices are set in an auction, billed per click or per thousand impressions. OpenAI does not require a minimum budget. There is no official price list or reliable average for European markets yet (as of September 2026).

No. The ad appears below the answer and, according to OpenAI, has no influence on its content. If you want to be named as a provider in the answer itself, you need GEO, the optimisation of content for AI systems.

No. Google Ads reaches people through search terms and has delivered measurable results for years. ChatGPT Ads reach them in a conversation with an AI. For most businesses, ChatGPT Ads are an additional channel that is best judged in direct comparison with Google Ads.

Conclusion

ChatGPT Ads replace neither Google Ads nor GEO. They are an additional channel whose ads appear while someone is preparing a decision. Nobody can say across the board whether that pays off today, including us.

If you have an offer that needs explaining, measure cleanly and run a limited test, you take a manageable risk and have your own figures after three months. If you hope to make up for missing content with advertising, you are better off investing in SEO and GEO first.
