# Common Link Building Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

T he most common link building mistakes are buying links without labelling them, swapping links on a large scale, anchor text stuffed with keywords and bulk links from directories or comments. Google classes all of this as link spam and, since its link spam update of December 2022, automatically strips such links of their value. Lasting backlinks come from content that other websites choose to link to on their own.

## What Is Link Building?

Link building covers every measure a website takes to earn links from other websites. According to its [own explanation](https://www.google.com/search/howsearchworks/how-search-works/ranking-results/), Google checks whether other prominent websites link or refer to a piece of content and treats that as a quality signal. A link from a relevant, trustworthy page strengthens the authority of the page it points to and helps it rank. What matters is how the link came about. If an editor sets it because your content helps their readers, it counts. If you bought it, swapped it or generated it automatically, it violates Google’s spam policies.

## The Most Common Link Building Mistakes

### 1. Buying Links Without Labelling Them

In its [spam policies](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/essentials/spam-policies?hl=en), Google explicitly lists buying and selling links for ranking purposes as link spam. That applies even when goods or services change hands instead of money. Paid links are allowed if they carry rel=”sponsored” or rel=”nofollow”. In that case, they usually pass no ranking value. Anyone who pays for a link in order to rank better is paying either for a policy violation or for a link with no SEO effect.

### 2. Large-Scale Link Exchanges

A mutual link between two partners who work together is normal. It becomes a problem when websites trade links systematically or create partner pages purely for cross-linking. Google names excessive link exchanges as a separate example of link spam. A link profile that comes largely from exchange partners shows no genuine interest from other websites.

### 3. Anchor Text Stuffed With Keywords

Anchor text is the clickable text of a link. If dozens of external links point to your site with the exact phrase “WordPress agency London”, it looks engineered. Link profiles that have grown organically consist mostly of the brand name, the URL or descriptive wording. Google recommends anchor text that is descriptive, concise and relevant to both pages, and treats keyword stuffing in anchor text as a violation of its spam policies.

### 4. Directory and Comment Links in Bulk

Entries in hundreds of web directories, links in forum signatures and blog comments with optimised anchor text all appear on Google’s list of link spam examples. The same goes for programs and services that create links automatically. A few directories with real value remain worthwhile, such as your Google Business Profile, trade associations or your regional chamber of commerce.

## What Google Says About Link Spam

In most cases, Google now ignores unnatural links. With the [link spam update](https://developers.google.com/search/blog/2022/12/december-22-link-spam-update?hl=en) that rolled out from 14 December 2022 to 12 January 2023, its AI system SpamBrain detects both sites that buy links and sites that exist only to pass links on. SpamBrain neutralises such links, and the ranking value they used to pass is lost. For you, this means bought links at best cost money without any effect. At worst, they lead to a manual action, which Google reports in Search Console.

## More Mistakes That Cost Rankings

### 5. Guest Posts Written Only for the Link

Guest posts are a legitimate format when they give readers of a trade publication something of value. However, Google explicitly lists advertorials and guest posts with optimised anchor text as link spam. The same applies to press releases that mainly distribute keyword links. Write guest posts for the audience, link sparingly and use your brand name or descriptive text.

### 6. Irrelevant Links

A link from a casino blog to an accountancy firm helps no reader. Google evaluates links in the context of the linking page. A single link from a regional business magazine or a portal in your industry therefore usually carries more weight than ten links from sites with no topical connection. For every link source, check whether its readers are also your audience.

### 7. No Content Worth Linking To

Most content never earns a single backlink. A [study by Backlinko and BuzzSumo](https://backlinko.com/content-study) of 912 million blog posts found in 2019 that 94 percent receive no external links at all. Links go to content that offers something unavailable elsewhere, such as original data and analysis, checklists and templates, calculators and tools, or articles based on real hands-on experience. One example is [our SEO checklist for a website relaunch](https://graphixisland.com/en/blog/website-relaunch-seo-checklist/).

### 8. Disavowing Links Too Hastily

Many SEO tools flag backlinks as “toxic” and recommend disavowing them through Google’s disavow tool. That score comes from the tool provider, not from Google. In its [help page on the disavow tool](https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/2648487?hl=en), Google states that most sites will not need the tool and warns that incorrect use can harm your visibility. Disavowing only makes sense if a large number of artificial links point to your site and have caused, or are likely to cause, a manual action.

## How to Build Backlinks That Last

You earn lasting backlinks through content and relationships, for example in these ways.

- Publish original data, such as findings from projects, surveys or benchmarks.
- Appear as an expert in trade media, podcasts and industry portals.
- Ask partners, clients and suppliers for a mention in case studies or project reports, provided the collaboration is real.
- Find pages that link to content that no longer exists and offer a suitable piece of your own as a replacement.
- Keep your Google Business Profile and the key industry directories complete and consistent.

Mentions in trade media pay off twice. Google counts the link, and AI systems such as ChatGPT or Perplexity draw on the same sources for their answers. How the two fit together is explained in [our article on the difference between SEO and GEO](https://graphixisland.com/en/blog/seo-vs-geo-difference/). ## Frequently Asked Questions About Link Building

### What are backlinks?

Backlinks are links from another website to yours. Search engines treat them as recommendations. Links from relevant, trustworthy pages strengthen the authority of the linked page and improve its chances of ranking well.

### Are backlinks still a ranking factor?

Yes. In its explanation of how Search works, Google states that one of the factors it uses to assess quality is whether other prominent websites link or refer to the content. Links are one signal among many. One strong link from the right topical context counts for more than a large number of random ones.

### Are paid backlinks forbidden?

They are not illegal, but they break Google’s spam policies if the link is meant to pass ranking value. Paid links only comply when marked with rel=”sponsored” or rel=”nofollow”. With that attribute, they usually pass no ranking value.

### How many backlinks does a website need?

There is no fixed number. What matters is how relevant and trustworthy the linking pages are. For a regional business, five links from local press, a trade association and partners can achieve more than a hundred links from web directories.

### Are nofollow links worthless?

No. Since 2019, Google has treated nofollow as a hint rather than a strict directive and may take such links into account. They also bring visitors, and mentions in well-known media strengthen your brand even without passing ranking value.

### When should I use the disavow tool?

Only if a large number of artificial or low-quality links point to your site and have triggered a manual action or are likely to. In all other cases, Google works out for itself which links to trust.
